Solana or Ethereum? A Developer’s Decision Series — Part 4 of 4
Three parts in, we’ve established the terrain. Solana and Ethereum are genuinely different to build on. Ethereum has more freelance volume today, but Solana is growing faster and is less crowded. And the institutions split the map: Ethereum for asset tokenization, Solana for payments.
Now the decision. If you’re a developer — especially one coming from Python with limited blockchain experience — here’s the framework I’d actually follow.
Do EVM first. Add Solana later, after your income base is stable. Sequencing beats trying to learn both chains at once, and here’s why.
You have no sunk cost, and your portfolio is immediately valid. If you’ve already built anything on the EVM stack — say, an ERC-20 plus ERC-721 project with Hardhat and OpenZeppelin — then continuing with Solidity means your learning directly reinforces your portfolio. Start with Solana instead and you face a long stretch of learning Rust and Anchor with nothing to show for it. For someone restarting a career, that income gap hurts.
Your finance interest and RWA meet on Ethereum. If you follow financial markets, real estate, or tax, that knowledge maps directly onto the RWA (real-world asset) narrative — and RWA runs on Ethereum. A supply-chain traceability project built around a token-plus-record separation pattern isn’t far, conceptually, from a compliance-gated tokenized asset. That’s a transferable strength, not a coincidence.
First contracts and reputation come faster where volume is higher. As Part 2 showed, Upwork’s blockchain market is still Solidity-centric. Early on, your priority is reviews and Job Success Score, and that accrues faster in the market with more listings.
The RWA headline names — BlackRock, JPMorgan — do not hire freelancers on Upwork. That tier of work goes to specialist teams and audit firms. The EVM work you can realistically win is more modest: token contracts, NFT minting and staking, small DeFi components, dApp front-end integration, audit prep like testing and gas optimization.
So run a two-track identity. Earn your living from standard Solidity work. Use RWA as positioning and premium narrative on your profile and portfolio. RWA is where the market is heading and it overlaps your interests, so even without big gigs today, being known as “the developer who gets this” carries value.
Now to ~3 months (Track 1: income base). Set up your Upwork profile around Smart Contract / Solidity, with your existing project as the headline. Add one high-demand mini-portfolio piece — a staking contract, or a simple token sale with vesting, the kind of thing that appears in listings constantly. Goal: your first three to five contracts and reviews.
In parallel (Track 1.5: differentiation). Build one portfolio piece that extends your existing work into an RWA angle — a tokenized asset contract with whitelist and compliance transfer restrictions, a simplified version of asset fractionalization or a tokenized treasury. Implementing the RWA separation pattern in code gives you a coherent story: “the developer expanding from traceability into RWA.”
~3 to 9 months (Track 2: add Solana). Once your income base is stable, learn Rust and Anchor in parallel and add “Solana Developer” to your profile. If you know C, you’ll mainly wrestle with ownership and borrowing rather than syntax. Aim at the payments and stablecoin-settlement side — the demand that flows like the Visa USDC and Western Union stablecoin initiatives will create. Thinner supply means better pricing and less competition than EVM.
Right now, use the Solidity you already have to build income and trust on EVM, differentiate with an RWA narrative, and add Solana once you’re stable as a premium expansion card. Trying to build on both chains from day one is, for someone restarting, a trap rather than a hedge.
The chains aren’t really rivals for your attention. They’re a sequence. Walk it in the right order.
