The Tattoo That Never Fades (Blockchain & Privacy, Part 1)
Why some data, once written to a blockchain, can never be erased — explained without the jargon.
Think about a tattoo.
You can regret it. You can cover it with a long sleeve. You can pay a lot of money to fade it. But the ink is in your skin. It doesn’t come out the way a pen mark washes off your hand.
A public blockchain is like that, but for data. And once you understand this one idea, a lot of blockchain’s promises — and its dangers — suddenly make sense.
The internet you know has a delete button
When you post something embarrassing on Instagram, you can take it down. When a website spreads a lie about you, a court can order it removed. It’s not always fast or easy, but there is someone in charge — a company, a server, an admin with a delete button.
That “someone in charge” is exactly what a public blockchain is built to remove.
A blockchain is a shared record kept by thousands of computers around the world at once. No single company owns it. No single person can change it. That’s the whole point — it was designed so that no government, no corporation, no bad actor could quietly rewrite history.
Which sounds wonderful. Until you flip it over.
The same feature, from the other side
Three things make a public blockchain special. Read them once as strengths, then again as risks.
It’s permanent. Once information is written and confirmed, it stays. Forever. Thousands of copies exist, and there’s no master copy to edit. (Strength: no one can forge your records. Risk: nothing can be taken back.)
It’s public. Anyone, anywhere, can read what’s on it. (Strength: total transparency. Risk: total exposure.)
No one is in charge. There’s no head office to send a takedown request to. (Strength: censorship-proof. Risk: complaint-proof.)
Now put those three together and ask a dark question: What if someone writes another person’s private information onto it — on purpose, to hurt them?
A home address. A hospital record. A secret. Written not on a website that can be pulled down, but onto the tattooed skin of a machine that no one can heal.
Why “just delete it” doesn’t work
You might think: surely the developer can add a delete function to the program?
They can — but it doesn’t do what you’d hope. On a blockchain, “deleting” something only hides it from the current view. The original entry still sits in the permanent history, readable by anyone who knows where to look. It’s like tearing a page out of a book after ten thousand photocopies have already been mailed worldwide. The page is gone from your copy. It’s still in everyone else’s.
There is no court order that can reach thousands of anonymous computers. There is no company to sue into compliance. The victim can’t remove it. The developer can’t remove it. It simply stays.
Why this matters even if you never touch crypto
This isn’t just a techie’s puzzle. Imagine the tools of a nasty breakup, a stalker, or an online mob — but with a “never forget” button attached. The kind of private exposure that today can eventually be scrubbed from the web could, on a blockchain, become permanent.
That’s the uncomfortable shadow side of a technology usually sold to us as pure progress.
But here’s the twist, and it’s the reason this is a series and not a single gloomy essay: “it can never be erased” turns out to be only half the story. There are real ways to blunt the harm — and, more importantly, ways to build these systems so the danger never arises in the first place.
